Where Microsoft Project does well

For planning a single project — tasks, durations, a Gantt schedule, task-level resourcing — Project is a mature, widely used tool, particularly in organisations already on Microsoft 365. Nothing here changes that.

What's often still missing

Where it usually breaks down is the layer above: which projects you actually do, with which people, and why those ones. Project gives you a plan per project; it doesn't answer whether that project, seen across the whole portfolio, is still the right call.

No network diagram of dependencies between projects — there's an impact panel and a dependency chain list, not a graph.
No skills model. Capacity is calculated from hours and availability, not from who can do what.
