Projects and programmes

Once you're running more than a handful of projects at once, a question comes up on its own: which projects actually belong together — not because they serve the same strategic theme, but because they're run as one organisational unit. That's what a programme is for.

What a programme is

A programme in Migreat! is a name under which you group related, standalone projects. Beyond that it's deliberately sparse: no budget of its own, no start or end date of its own, and no status of its own. What a programme does carry is a visibility setting — visible to the whole organisation, or not.

A project belongs to at most one programme at a time. A programme cannot sit inside another programme; there's no nested structure.

That's exactly what the portfolio management page already says in passing: "a programme is exactly that: a name that related projects sit under. It has no budget, no dates and no status of its own." This page doesn't go further than that — there genuinely isn't more to a programme than this.

Why this is deliberately narrow

A budget for the group as a whole, a timeline for it, or a control screen specific to that level would suggest the grouping is itself a governable unit, separate from the projects inside it. That's not how Migreat! treats it: governance happens at project level (timelines, capacity, health — all per project) and at portfolio level (strategic themes, the idea funnel report). The grouping sits deliberately in between, as an arrangement, not as a third layer of governance with its own numbers.

If you do want to see how a group of projects is doing together — capacity, health, progress — you use the existing portfolio and project reports, not the programme itself.

What Migreat! does not do

  • No programme budget, no programme dates and no programme status.
  • No separate programme dashboard or programme-level planning.
  • No nested programmes: a programme cannot sit inside another programme.

Which plan holds this

Programmes are in every plan, same as projects themselves — there's no separate gate for this.
